2-day Digital Filming workshop

WHAT TO EXPECT

This course introduces the learner to basic concepts in filming their own footage on a Canon XF405 camera. The course tackles issues like: what should be filmed, how should shots be taken, what are cut-aways, adjusting focus/ colour balance, listening out for good quality audio, recording on a boom microphone versus lapel microphone, thinking of frames, filming pieces to camera when you are shooting alone and assembling/dismantling camera equipment on location. The tutor is usually someone who has filmed their own reports on location for a major broadacster/ documentary filmmaker. 

WHO SHOULD JOIN?

  • You should join if you'd like an introduction to self-shooting  
  • Basics of making films for TV news. documetaries and the corporate sector
  • Help boost your confidence in your abilites as a videographer 
  • We also cover: the sort of shots you can get on mobile phones and the priciples of filming/ getting good shots on your phone camera 
  • Usually a guest tutor  who works in the field for a well-known media organisation is invited to say a few words toward the end of a weekend session (usually on day 2 - dependant on availabilty) 

PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS

  • You should have some knowledge and interest in filmmaking. 
  • Some prior experience with using cameras is preferred but not mandatory 
  • You should be able to speak, write and understand English

Canon XF405 and your mobile

  • The Canon 405 is an industry-standard camera used in news and documentary filmmaking. 
  • We also ask candidates to think of how they would take shots on their mobile phones 
  • We focus on the principles of how you'd shoot something rather than on what camera 
  • We advise students to borrow equipment from us but you could bring your own equipment. For any equipment you may need to borrow from the institute, you will have to pay for the use of equipment seperately. Enquire with us to find out more.
